The Master Builders Association of New South Wales is pleased to be selected as the WINNER of the 2021 SafeWork Award for the industry associations category.

The MBA of NSW entry outlined initiatives such as the identification of a trend in shade cloth fires that led to the development of a new standard for safety mesh, the dissemination of safety alerts a couple of times each month and engagement with industry and regulatory bodies on safety matters.

“After the third shade cloth fire in the Sydney metro area, we felt compelled to do something proactive, cognisant that the Building and Construction Industry were using a UK Standard from the Oil & Gas Sector that was not relevant to our industry nor suited to the Australian environment, we set about meeting with the Minister, who supported the development of such a Standard, so long as there was no additional cost to builders”.

The bulk of our solution demonstrated excellence in protecting workers at risk. We identified the most common request fielded by the Safety Department is the need for information and support relating to HRCW SWMS and Safety Management Systems, which is encouraging that builders want to keep up to date with current WHS requirements.

Our suite of Safety Management Systems, cover Safety Environmental and Quality disciplines. We used industry knowledge and language coupled with current terminology to make them user friendly. The content is sequentially structured in the same order that a safety management system would be implemented on site.

Our systems have been gap audited by a Certification Accreditation Body and have been deemed to comply with the relevant Australian and International Standards.

“Having a Safety Management System is one thing, implementing one that you have been trained in, that reflects your businesses safety principles, goes a long way to reducing incidents on site and keeping people safe. It is a real honour to be recognised by SafeWork NSW”.
