Westfield Sydney is an iconic world class retail and commercial development located at the heart of Sydney’s CBD with three existing obsolete structures being transformed into a single homogenous retail centre occupying over a third of the Pitt Street Mall.
The unparalleled challenges of project  of this size, CBD logistics, environment, heritage façade issues, infrastructure upgrades, accelerated programme and the requirement to maintain the structural integrity of the occupied iconic Sydney Tower and commercial offices above the centre during construction required strategic design, planning and execution by the Westfield design & construct team.
Construction challenges and innovations were numerous including:
•    Keeping areas open for trading and public pedestrian walkways accessible; 
•    Allowing Centrepoint Tower and other restaurants to continue to trade throughout construction;
•    Access to Myers at Pitt Street and the two bridge levels above had to remain open during construction; 
•    Fire exits and essential services for the commercial offices and Centrepoint Tower had to be maintained and enhanced during construction;
•    Existing perimeter walls were maintained for as long as possible to minimise environmental impacts;
•    Using off-street (internal) loading bay on Castlereagh Street for delivery and pick up of materials and to allow for trucks to enter and exit in a forward direction;
•    Use of  12 metre high acoustic/dust control screens;
•    Staged closure of the existing centre to minimise the construction effect on the Sydney retail precinct.
