The project consisted of five floors of fitout between level three and level seven, with exposure to an existing void between levels two and three, all while level two remained a client active floor. This year we had the good fortune to see a feat of engineering in the form of suspended formwork and a suspended scaffold deck. The problem of cutting and removing a concrete slab on level 4 required a self-supporting and suspended catch deck. The reason the catch deck had to be suspended was that Level 3 slab was not able to withstand the weights of both the required scaffolding structure and the cut concrete. The possibility of propping level 3 from level 2 was not feasible because of an unmovable circular led audio/visual screen and the pedestrian traffic of the level 2 tenants. And that’s what made the Shape entry 400 George Street fitout 2025’s award winning entry.
