This residential aged care building of 144 beds is located in the rural backdrop of Mittagong. The first stage of building works commenced in 2012 and consisted of 73 beds and associated common areas and infrastructure. This stage was adjacent to the original Abbey Nursing Home which was operational until mid-2014, when residents were transferred into Stage I. The original nursing home was then demolished to make way to Stage II of the facility, to be completed in September 2015. The project has generous lounge and dining room areas along with a hairdressing salon, theatre, activity areas and a stone chapel. The chapel was constructed from retrieved materials from the original building which featured stone and a standing-seam copper roof. There are landscaped courtyards and surrounds as well as staff areas including a commercial kitchen and laundry. The environment has not been forgotten with water storage tanks for fire use, domestic water backup and non-potable storage for toilet use. The judges were impressed with the high quality of finishes throughout the building along with the extensive furnishings and artwork which give a pleasant domestic environment for both residents and staff.
