Sydney’s new second International Airport at Bringelly sits on a massive site, incorporating a new 90,000m2 terminal building, with a roofed area of 50,000m2, air bridges, 964 carparking spaces, 6m high basement with underground baggage handling facilities, apron works, car parking, access roads, incoming services 10kms of fuel pipework, fuel farm, 2 data centres, extensive civil works and landscaping. Multiplex and their team modified the original design to move from a difficult curved roof to a mono sloped roof with a curved ceiling creating a much more interesting shape internally. The new design allows increased natural light into the space. The roof is supported on 88 tapered feature concrete columns, poured on site in 2 or 3 sections as they varied in height from 6 -18m. These columns provide a feature support for the Steel roof structure. The external façade is a curtain wall supported by steel columns, aluminium panels and precast concrete. The quality of the finished product is exceptional.
