New College Village is a purpose designed building providing 7 floors of post graduate student accommodation comprising 319 bedrooms in self contained, studio and group accommodation constructed above a basement carpark.    An acoustic screen is located on the side of the building that faces Anzac Parade to reduce the noise impact on those rooms, generated by the traffic. The glazed screen allows the eastern sun into a courtyard while also allowing vision beyond. This screened courtyard also allows the residents to open their doors and windows for natural ventilation.    All of the units are provided with either an ensuite or a shared bathroom in some of the group accommodation of 4 or 5 units. There are individual cooking facilities and fridges provided for all studio units and a shared cooking facility and refrigerator for each of the group accommodation.    All the rooms have the ability for natural ventilation from openable windows. External shade screens are used where appropriate to reduce summer heat gain, while still allowing the winter sun to enter for warmth. Reverse cycle air conditioning is provided for all units, where the student is able to activate it as required.    Water heating is a central gas fired system with a loop main to provide minimal losses to each unit. The lighting is all fluorescent technology to reduce energy consumption while still providing quality light levels for the students.    Rainwater is collected into 96,000 litres of storage that is used for toilet flushing and irrigation. A further 125,000 litres of detentions is available via an in-ground tank that allows water to infiltrate into the aquifer via the sandy foundation conditions on the site, this is before any rainwater flows into the street gutters.    This project has created an accommodation that provides the privacy required by post graduate students, while offering a range of opportunities for interaction and social gathering, which is not just a place to live but provides a sense of community and belonging. This project also provides an environment that is healthy for the students, with natural ventilation and light, and is energy efficient at the same time.
