Project
Sydney Gateway Stages 1&3

This major project, connecting Sydney’s motorway network to the city’s Domestic and International Terminals, involved the fabrication of more than 10,000 tonnes of steel across fabrication shops throughout Australia. The centrepiece of the project is a pair of twin-arch steel bridges over the historic Alexandria Canal, each comprising over 2,000 tonnes of steel. Each arch was assembled on site from seven individually shop-welded segments. Due to footprint, depth, and foundation constraints, as well as strict height restrictions within the flight path, the arches were assembled flat on the ground beside the canal, then lifted, rotated, and launched into position at night. This complex operation required specially designed temporary connections and struts, which effectively transformed the arches into trusses during installation. The result stands as an outstanding example of the most effective use of steel in the delivery of a major, complex structure.
