The District represents a new vision in food courts. The 3500m2 space directly above Chatswood Railway Station was designed to capture the essence of a ‘streets and laneways’ dining precinct in an internalised environment. This has been successfully constructed through the use of form, texture and colour by way of brick patterned glass, differing pavilion structures, textured floor tiles and numerous forms of street art along with the use of detailed copper and timber materials. The building finishes represent a high-end urban landscape.
The construction site is directly above the operating rail station (with 30,000 commuters daily) and was subject to the requirements of City Rail in regards to works near the rail corridor. 
Construction difficulties at this site were materials handling, procurement of overseas building materials, installation of drainage and electrical services to all shop tenancies and public areas and fire engineering requirements due to the nature of the food court and its location on Level 3 of the shopping centre. 
Access for installation of drainage and electrical service was through a horizontal 600mm void space underneath the food court floor. Approximately 80 penetrations (600 x 600mm) were required to safely access and install these services. 
Structural-steel dining pods that cantilevered out over the building façade were a critical activity for fabrication, erection onsite and a very innovated method of final positioning of these dining pods.
The project was completed in a very tight timeframe of eight months to produce a very unique new style of food court – ‘The District’. It is a tribute to Inten Constructions’ management and site team. With careful planning of materials handling and procurement, this project was finished in this timeframe with a high standard of workmanship in all areas.
