Pinnacle reaches new heights in secluded architecture, set high on the mountain behind Jamberoo with commanding views along the Kiama coast and out to the Pacific Ocean. The house is comprised of two distinct Pavilions, each with a defined purpose of living or sleeping. Being in a remote location and heavily forested meant that the building envelope was identified as a category 3 bushfire hazard, and that the materials had to comply and perform as well as be still maintaining an acceptable aesthetic.  The house incorporates a high level of Sustainable principles, and is totally self-sufficient in water and electricity needs. Concealed gutters and downpipes feeds the rain water into 200,000 litres of storage, and a solar farm with 120 photovoltaic panels provides the power. A Biolytix waste water treatment was chosen for it’s extremely low energy consumption and environmental credits, with the worms doing all the work.   The Living pavilion faces north along it’s longest axis, with a design challenge for the east views, while the bedroom pavilion is slightly tilted from north. The walls, ceiling and roof are well insulated combined with Low-e glazing which is used throughout, to reduce heat losses in winter. The Insulation and glazing combined with appropriate shading is used for the summer comfort, which is enhanced with the louver windows for cross flow ventilation, eliminating the need for energy guzzling air conditioning.    Water heating is Solar with a gas instantaneous booster. A gas cook top, electric oven, microwave oven and a gas Barbeque takes care of the cooking. Low energy T5 fluorescent tubes in lighting pelmets provide very simple and effective level of lighting. Wood is used in a large recirculating fireplace in the main living area, with small energy efficient heaters in the bedrooms.    The Pinnacle is an exciting result of careful design and choice of materials, resulting in a bright comfortable house to live in, with a high level of energy efficiency, low running costs, and minimal reliance on fossil fuels.
