Project
Barton Park Recreational Precinct Upgrade

This project comprised the 12-hectare Barton Park recreational Upgrade works for the bayside Council situated in Banksia. This former landfill site has been transformed into a new open space recreational hub along the Rockdale Wetlands Corridor.  Key construction features include:  • Demolish existing St George Football Club Grandstand.  • Excavation and on-site containment of asbestos contaminated soil including, capping in accordance with the Remedial Action Plan.  • Performing extensive ground improvement over the 120,000m2 footprint.  • Import in excess of 30,000m3 of VENM.   • Install over 3km of trenches for stormwater, electrical and hydraulic services.  • Building reinforced concrete, blockwork and keystone retaining walls.  • Construct a 950m long shared path including 520m long elevated boardwalk along Muddy Creek connecting to the Barton Park Pedestrian Bridge at Bestic Street.  • Construct three full size and one-half size football fields, four tennis courts, and two multi-purpose courts.   • New Grandstand including change facilities, clubhouse, amenities building, tennis club house, playgrounds with shade structures together with 10,000m2 of parking and internal roads.    Throughout the project, sustainability was a priority, with considerations made at every stage. The use of recycled materials, 50,000m3+ of asbestos contaminated soil was contained on site & capped with excess of 30,000m3 of VENM sourced from other nearby civil sites. All mulch generated from the earlier clearing activities was utilised on the site.  Ford Civil undertook the majority of earthworks under inhouse asbestos supervision and management controls where it was previously anticipated to be under clean conditions. This was achieved whilst maintaining programme efficiencies, interactions with various trades and maintaining separation between clean and dirty zones. The widely varied scope of the works meant that major earthworks, building foundation, inground services, remediation of existing ground conditions, construction of new grandstand, sporting facilities, roadworks etc were all occurring at similar time frames requiring a high level of planning to ensure safety as well as dealing with contaminated materials in accordance with strict environmental requirements. All this was achieved within the initial programme which was to great credit of Ford Civil.  Ford Civil has achieved a quality project as a result of their ability to be flexible during the design and construction phases in order to respond to site conditions that were evolving throughout the project.
