The centre consists of 3500sqm pool hall with spa, leisure pool, program pool and 25m pool. Attached to the pool hall is a 2000sqm multi-storey building consisting of office space, amenities, gym facilities and a crèche.  During the construction of the Andrew “Boy” Charlton Aquatic Centre, FDC encountered a number of obstacles during construction including neighbour objections to its construction, tidal water, unusually high levels of inclement weather in addition to the discovery of ground contamination, with asbestos, acid sulphate and cyanide.  The structural steel comprises eight trusses spanning the width of the pool hall, with the largest being 65m with no intermediate supports. The structural steel is finished in corrosion-resistant paint and all connections are silicone sealed. A feature of the project is the extensive ceramic tiling, which has been laid to a high standard, together with a co-generation plant providing energy for running the pool systems.  FDC has overcome the above obstacles and created a wonderful aquatic centre for the community. FDC has delivered a quality facility.
