The Bourbon Hotel is an iconic landmark in Sydney’s most prominent entertainment district in the heart of Kings Cross.
The project involves the demolition of the internal structure of the building, whilst maintaining the existing façade, with a complete structural upgrade of the building including underpinning and new structural steel framework to accommodate the façade and the proposed internal structures.
The project team encountered a number of challenges, specifically dealing with restricted access for materials handling, and in managing the risks associated with an existing building that had been modified and altered a number of times since its opening in 1967.
In collaboration with their engineers, the project team at Buildcorp Interiors has investigated, designed and implemented an intricate supportive system of props to support the existing façade and to allow for lower ground works.
The execution of the works involving this support system has only been achievable through the ongoing detailed consultation with the designers and with the contractors working on the project.
The judges said that the project team managed the risks associated with the works well, and through the consultation arrangements implemented on site seemed to be providing both a safe and productive site.
