Winner

The Sapphire is a quality-constructed display home and a Certified Passive House, built using rigorous standards to achieve quantifiable energy efficiency as well as comfort through five design principles: extreme air tightness, continuous insulation, high-performance windows and doors, no thermal bridges and a Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation system. While reducing environmental impact, residents of a Passive House enjoy excellent indoor air quality and temperature year-round. The Sapphire is an equal first Certified Passive House in NSW, the first Certified Passive House in the Blue Mountains, the first Certified Passive House in Australia to meet the highest bushfire risk rating – Bushfire Attack Level Flame Zone (BAL-FZ) and the first house in NSW to receive Healthy House Australia Certification.  Healthy houses use specific construction methods and materials to reduce the risk of condensation, mould, electromagnetic fields, toxins, chemical off-gassing and other risks to health. All paints and finishes are low VOC (volatile organic compounds), and low-formaldehyde boards, low-toxin furniture and bedding and chemical-free cleaning products were used. To enhance the environmental impact, the windows and doors are triple-glazed UPVC (Ultraviolet stabilised PVC). Smart technology is used to control flame zone shutters and the efficient LED lighting. A 5kW solar photovoltaic system with 10kW battery storage system improves the environmental impact. A Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation system continually draws filtered outdoor air into living spaces and bedrooms and exhausts stale air from bathrooms and kitchens, delivering fresh tempered air to the home. Rainwater is collected from the roof into a 22,000-litre rainwater tank, which is connected to all internal fixtures. The kitchen sink tap is the only tap connected to the mains water supply, which will be used mostly for drinking as it is treated with fluoride for teeth health. Hot water is provided from a heat pump system. Any excavated materials were re-used on the site, with rocks also used for the building and landscaping. The finished home is bright and comfortable with low environmental impact. It is a worthy winner of the 2020 Excellence in Environmental Management – Housing.
