Central railway station is the second busiest station across the NSW metropolitan rail network. This D&C project was for the demolition and construction of a new entry and easy access facilities at the Devonshire Street entry portal, a location that experiences approximately 10,000 pedestrian movements per hour in peak times.
The upgrade was to provide rail commuters and the general public with easy access between street, concourse and platform levels to comply with disability access legislation which included the installation of lifts and escalators.
The design was particularly innovative in allowing the new work to be constructed without the removal of the existing structure, with the execution of these works carried out under extreme and unusual building conditions never encountered on a green field site.
All building operations involved the site team in a high level of stakeholder interface that allowed works to be programmed around daily station operations to ensure pedestrian safety was never compromised.
