Border community rules

Master Builders have spoken with Service NSW seeking clarity on the ‘closed border’ rules for members living and working around the NSW-Victoria border. They have provided us with some guidance around the rules in relation to builders and tradies.

Here is what you need to know:

  • As a worker in the building and construction industry, you are deemed to be performing critical services
  • Border community residents can travel across the border in both directions, but you must have a border entry permit
  • If a NSW border community resident holding a permit travels into Victoria but remains within 50kms of the border, upon returning to NSW they are not required to self-isolate.
  • If a NSW border community resident holding a permit travels into Victoria beyond 50kms of the border, upon returning to NSW they are required to self-isolate for 14 days.
  • A NSW critical services worker who returns from working in Victoria is required to self-isolate for 14 days. During this isolation period they are still allowed to leave home for work only.
    • For example: A NSW resident with a critical services permit completes a job in Victoria. The following day they commence a new job in NSW. They are allowed to conduct work activities but they must self-isolate at all other times (outside of working hours) for 14 days. The 14 day period starts from the last day they were in Victoria.
