SMART AND SKILLED
Master Builders has a contract with the NSW Government (Department of Education) to offer and provide training and assessment programs under the government's Smart and Skilled program. Smart and Skilled provides government-subsidised training and higher-level courses to help you get skills to find a job and advance your career.
Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with:
- An entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III
- Government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.
Are you eligible for Smart and Skilled?
- Are you 15 years old or over?
- no longer at school?
- living or working in NSW?
- an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen?
If you answered ‘Yes' to all four questions, you're eligible for Smart and Skilled training.
Other eligibility conditions
Your eligibility is not affected if you have completed a vocational education and training (VET) course, including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, as part of your high school education.
There are also some exceptions to the eligibility conditions described above, such as for Aboriginal people.
Funding is subject to availability. Entry requirements apply for all qualifications. Previous qualifications achieved do not affect eligibility but may affect the student fee.
NSW FEE-FREE*
Skills NSW provides fully subsidised training to gain skills in Australia’s growing industries. The construction industry has been identified as one of the state’s priority industry growth areas. Master Builders has a range of qualifications from certificates to diplomas to help you take the next step in your career.
NSW Fee-Free* is available for people who enrol after 1 December 2022 and commence their course between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023.

Are you eligible for NSW Fee-Free* training?

NORTH COAST EDUCATION FLOOD RECOVERY SUPPORT PACKAGE
As part of the NSW Government's North Coast Education Flood Recovery Support Package, Smart and Skilled fee-paying students from the seven LGA's listed below, enrolling from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 will have their fees waived.
Who is eligible?
Smart and Skilled students who enrol from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 and who live or work or are attending training (excluding circumstances where the course delivery is conducted entirely online) in any of the following seven local government areas (LGAs):
- Ballina
- Byron
- Clarence Valley
- Kyogle
- Lismore
- Richmond Valley
- Tweed
SKILLING FOR RECOVERY
The NSW Government and Master Builders are committed to supporting the economic recovery of NSW from the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Under the Skilling for Recovery program, Training Services NSW is providing fee-free* training places with Master Builders if you meet ONE of the following criteria:
- aged 16 to 24 years old OR
- A NSW Veteran or their recognised partner or spouse OR
- Unemployed OR
- At risk of unemployment OR
- Employed and don't hold a Certificate III or above qualification
Plus you must also meet all of the following Smart and Skilled criteria:
- live or work in NSW
- be an Australian Citizen, a permanent resident, a New Zealand citizen, or a humanitarian visa holder
- have left school
*Training under JobTrainer is fee-free and fully funded by the NSW and Commonwealth goverments. Subject to Smart and Skilled, and Skilling for Recovery eligibility criteria. Limited places are available valid until 30 June 2023.

HOW DO I OBTAIN A USI?
A USI is your individual education number for life. It also gives you an online record of your vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia.
