In May 2012, the Commonwealth agreed to fund the Construction Apprenticeship Mentoring Scheme (CAMS).
The primary objective of the project is to increase the apprenticeship completion rate by 1% per annum to 62% over the initial three year period. A secondary objective of the project is to increase significantly the number of employers who report apprentices are well prepared for a career in the building and construction industry
The CAMS project is a nationally coordinated approach to supporting apprentices in the building and construction industry delivered through Master Builders’ network of 33 offices around Australia including major regional centres.
An online resource with information for current and prospective apprentices, news and FAQs, moderated chat rooms, and links to social networking.
Telephone, email and face-to-face advice for apprentices and employers by full-time advisers
A volunteer apprentice mentoring scheme to match apprentices to carefully selected and training industry volunteer mentors for more intensive one-on-one support; click here for more information.
Supporting ‘out-of-trade’ apprentices through transitional training, continued mentoring support and subsidised work placements (NSW and SA pilots only)
Working with schools and communities to provide information about the apprenticeship pathway.
CAMS will be supported by an industry Reference Committee, including representations from the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council, the CFMEU, TAFE Directors Australia and major employers.
Will help address the under-representation of women and Indigenous Australians in construction trades, and support apprentices in regional areas who can face significant barriers to completing their training.
CAMS build on the significant existing investment by Master Builders in apprenticeship support and involve a substantial co-contribution of over 25% of the project cost.
